Performing Arts (Dance) - BTEC Level 3 at The North Durham Academy

Course description

Who is the course for?

This course is designed for those students who wish to experience a wider practical training than the A level Dance course alone, and is an ideal choice for any student considering a career in dance or dance teaching. The course will eventually lead to the BTEC Level 3 Certificate (Year 1 - equivalent to an AS level) or Subsidiary Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance) (Year 2 - equivalent to one A level).

 

Course outline:

Students on this course work towards gaining a variety of BTEC units in the following areas:

Core units:

Performing to an Audience

 Dance Performance

Technical units:

Choreographic Principles

Developing Classical Ballet Technique

Developing Contemporary Dance Technique

Jazz Dance

 

Will I need any qualifications or experience to do the course?

You will preferably have dance experience in outside dance schools following grades in ballet and modern and/or GCSE Dance.

 

How will I be taught?

The course is taught through whole group sessions of a practical and occasionally theoretical nature.

 

How will I be assessed?

There will be regular assessments where feedback and grades will be given.

 

What qualifications will I gain from the course?

This course will lead to a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Dance (equivalent to one A level).

 

Do I need any special equipment or materials for the course?

Suitable clothing is required for practical areas.

 

What can I do next?

You may go on to study an HND, degree or diploma at a higher level. This can lead to a career in teaching, community dance worker, different types of arts administration posts, choreographing and performing.

Applications should be submitted as soon as possible. All applicants will be invited to discuss the course/courses applied for with a senior member of staff to ensure students are selecting the right course/courses. To help with the process we will also look at recent student reports and the attainment information provided by subject staff. Any offer of a place at North Durham Academy may well be dependant on students achieving specified GCSE grades.

Entry requirements

General Entry Criteria

The general criteria for entry to Year 12 of North Durham Academy’s 16+ courses are as follows:

  1. Most A Level and BTEC Level 3 courses: 5 separate GCSE subject passes at grades A* to C, including Maths and English.
  2. Meet the additional subject-specific requirements which are needed for some courses.
  3. For Maths, Science and Psychology courses, students will be required to complete a ‘Maths for Sixth Form’ course.
  4. Level 1/2 VRQ Courses: 4 GCSE grades at D or above preferably including Maths or English.
  5. Attend the Induction course in July and complete the Summer Bridging study packs relevant to the courses you want to study prior to enrolment.
  6. Agree to the conditions of the Sixth form Learning Agreement.

Any personal issues regarding entry criteria and extenuating circumstances can be raised and discussed at interview.

 

Entry Criteria:

 Grade C /Merit or above in a Dance or PE-related subject.
