FRENCH/GERMAN/SPANISH A LEVEL at Queensmead School

Course description

The knowledge and understanding requirements of the AS are inextricably linked to the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Course content

Unit 1: Understanding and Written Response in French/German/Spanish

Section A: Listening - 30 minutes
Section B: Reading - 45 minutes
Section C: Short essay-one question from a choice of 3 - 45 minutes

Unit 2: Speaking response in French/German/Spanish

30% of AS
Discussion of a stimulus card - 5 minutes
Conversation - 10 minutes
35 minutes (including 20 minutes preparation time)

Unit 3: Listening, Reading and Writing French/German/Spanish

Listening - 30 minutes
Reading and Writing - 1 hour
Writing - 1 hour - a minimum of 250 words

Unit 4: Speaking French/German/Spanish

Preparation - 20 minutes
Discussion of a stimulus card - 5 minutes
Conversation - 10 minutes
35 minutes (including 20 minutes preparation time)

Entry requirements

Given the linguistic demands of Year 12, candidates should have a GCSE grade A or higher in GCSE French/German/Spanish.

Assessment

The AS can be taken as a stand-alone qualification or as the first half of the full A Level course. Units 1 and 2 are taken as exams at the end of Year 12 and Units 3 and 4 at the end of Year 13.

Future opportunities

An A Level qualification can be an asset for careers such as leisure and tourism, marketing, retail, publishing, engineering, teaching and translating. A number of companies actively seek applicants with language skills.
