Health & Social Care AS A2 (Single or Double Award) at Prince William School

Course content

At advanced level you can choose from different types of awards:Twelve Unit Award:   This is equivalent in length and standard to two A levels.Six Unit Award:        This is equivalent in length and standard to one A level.Three Unit Award:    This is equivalent to an AS (single) but can also be done as a Double AS (6 units). AIMS OF THE COURSELooking after and promoting the health of the community and care for the needy are important areas of work. This A level develops and extends students’ understanding of the Health and Social Care Services and introduces them to some of the more advanced skills and knowledge needed to work in this area or progress onto a Higher Education course at University. COURSE DESIGN AND CONTENTStudents will do a mixture of mandatory and optional units covering a range of topics which include: ·        Effective caring·        Communicating in Health and Social Care·        Health, Illness and Disease·        Nutrition and Dietetics·        Need and Provision for Early Years Clients·        Working in Health and Social Care·        Factors and Theories of Human Development·        Physiological Aspects of Health·        Research Methods and Perspectives TEACHING METHODSStudents learn to work responsibly and with the support of staff are expected to take control of their own learning. Examples of the ways in which they may be asked to learn are: ·        Working on their own and as part of a team·        Doing short projects and longer assignments·        Through work experience

Assessment

Vocational A levels have the same points score system as other A levels ·        In two thirds of the units, work will be collected into a portfolio for evidence based assessment.       In the remaining units there will be external assessment.

Future opportunities

This qualification could lead to courses at University in Nursing, Teaching, Social work, Occupational Therapy, Health and Community Studies, Sociology, Radiology as well as directly into work.
