Media Studies A Level at Verulam School

Course description

Media Studies offers the chance to combine a theoretical understanding of the mass media in society and methods for analysing media ‘texts’, together with the development of practical production skills.

Course Content

The course covers the range of media. We examine all aspects of TV and Radio programmes, films, advertising, newspapers, magazines and e-media.

AS

  • Unit 1 - Investigating Media 
  • Unit 2 - Creating Media and Critical Evaluation

A2

  • Unit 3 - Critical Perspectives
  • Unit 4 - Critical Investigation and linked production

With the increasing media-saturation of society, it is increasingly important for audiences to become critical and reflective consumers of media products. The ability to be able to analyse and interpret media texts is an important skill. Hence the increase in the popularity of the subject at university level in recent years.

Entry requirements

B grade in Media Studies at GCSE. If the subject has not been taken at GCSE, a B in GCSE English Language is expected.
