English Literature A - A2 Level at Skinners' Academy

Course description

English Literature offers the opportunity to further develop your appreciation and interest in literature from a variety of social, historical and cultural contexts. You will acquire new skills to aid analysis of texts and expand your ability to clearly communicate incisive and individualised responses; mostly in the form of highly structured essays. Students will take TWO units. The third unit is READING FOR MEANING which is assessed by a two and a half examination without texts. Candidates will answer two questions on unseen extracts / wider reading, the theme will be: “Love through the Ages” or a theme of choice. The fourth unit is coursework: EXTENDED ESSAY/SHAKESPEARE STUDY Candidates must study three texts, one of which must be a Shakespeare text and produce an extended comparative essay on the texts of 3,000 words.

Entry requirements

for AS level – a minimum of 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above, usually with a Grade B or above in the subject to be taken at AS level or in an associated subject. for A2 level – candidates should normally have obtained a pass at AS level, preferably at grade C or above.

Future opportunities

Many students will also use their qualification to go straight into employment rather than into higher education. A very wide range of occupations is open to students with an AS or A level in English Literature. This can also include the opportunity to Students with AS or A level English Literature have a wide range of possible career and higher education opportunities. You will learn and use a wide variety of transferable skills during the course. These include writing for a variety of purposes, responding to literary texts, expressing informed and independent opinions and identifying and developing the links between different parts of the subject. These skills are in demand from employers and universities and colleges and are also valuable in their own right.
