This is an A Level course

Course content

This course has been designed to encourage students to take a broad view of design and technology, to develop their capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing.

Entry requirements

Students need to have achieved a minimum of a grade B at GCSE in one of the Design and Technology subjects - Resistant Materials/Graphic Products/Product Design.

Assessment

Assessment - in first year
Unit 1
- 2 hour written examination on Materials, Components and Application (50% of AS level, 25% of A level)

Unit 2 - Learning through Designing and Making - single design and make project (50% of AS level, 25% of A level)
In second year:

Unit 3 - 2 hour written examination on Design and Manufacture ( 25% of A level)

Unit 4 - Design and Making practice - single design and make project (25% of A level)

Course content to include - Materials, components and application(including smart and modern materials)/Design and market influences (including role/influence of designers)/Processes and manufacture (including CAD/CAM

 

Financial information

Usual school stationary equipment. Students will need to purchase A3 plastic folders (3 each) for design work submission (or memory sticks for electronic submission)
Also contribution will need to be made towards material costs for making.

Future opportunities

Progression to degree level and career in Design/teaching/engineering etc.

Teaching/learning will be in practical workshop areas and design/ICT room.
Support will be given by teaching staff and faculty Technician.
You will be expected to attend after school/extra curricular sessions to complete project work.
