English Literature A2 GCE A Level at Weatherhead High School

Course description

Do you love reading? Have you enjoyed the poetry and fiction you have studied for GCSE? Do you want an A level that is highly regarded by universities and employers?

Studying English literature immerses you in some of the major texts of English culture. You will learn about the wonderful tradition of writing in English, and become familiar with many of the greatest writers.

A variety of literary forms will be studied, including poetry, fiction and drama. This is a course that also offers you the opportunity to do your own research, and to supplement your knowledge of the texts with wider reading of your own. If you love Literature, this is the course for you.

Course content

This A level will develop you as a writer, and your own essay writing skills will then be extremely useful in many other areas of academic study; English Literature graduates go on to a wide variety of careers.

Entry requirements

You will need to achieve a grade C or above in GCSE English and English Literature.

Assessment

Unit Three: Reading for Meaning

You will study a variety of literature texts based on the theme of Love Through the Ages.

60% of the total A2 marks

Unit Four: Extended Essay and Shakepeare Study

You will study at least one of Shakespeare's plays and produce a piece of coursework based on the texts you study.

40% of the total A2 marks

Coursework = 3000 words
