Music GCE A Level at Oriel High School
Music is an exciting and interesting subject which is a valued qualification when applying for university. It allows someone with an enthusiasm for music to immerse themselves in a wide range of fulfilling musical experiences. This challenging but rewarding specification will develop knowledge and understanding gained at Key Stage Four by focusing in upon Classical and Popular Areas of Study and studying individual pieces in significant detail. The three skills that will specifically be developed are Performing, Composition and Listening (and applying knowledge and understanding). This extends from the GCSE course and is intended to build upon previous success.
Course Details The course is divided into six units, three in the first year (AS) and three corresponding units in the second year (A2). Units include: a Listening exam in which you need to apply your knowledge and understanding, a composition unit which allows you to express your interpretation of a given task, and a Performance related unit which requires you to present a short programme of pieces (the use of Music Technology is permitted for this unit). .
5 or more GCSE or equivalent passes at grades A*-C across 5 or more subjects including GCSE Maths and English
Average GCSE Point Score of 40 or greater
We prefer you to have achieved a GCSE Grade B in Music; however this is not compulsory. What you must have is the ability to play a musical instrument to a relatively high standard or the ability to use Music Technology in performance. What you must have is an open mind to explore a variety of music and an enthusiasm to learn from some of the greatest musicians of the past and present
