Applied Science GCSE OCR J649 at Sandown Bay Academy

Course description

The aim of this science course is to allow students to experience vocationally related learnign and helps prepare them for involvement in scientific issues in everyday life. Students will develop scientific skills and study science in the workplace - units 1 and 3. Unit 2 covers Science for the needs of the community. This is a double award and assessment is through a Yr 10 exam (June)which accounts for 33% of the overall mark and coursework portfolios which account for 67%.

Future opportunities

You could take this course to prepare for an NVQ Level 1 or 2 in a related subject and depending on your other qualifications, you could progress onto courses leading to the Advanced GCE in Science or Applied Science. With further training, you could go into a job related to science such as a Laboratory Researcher, Science Technician or Pharmacist. You could also go straight into employment as the course is delivered through a work-based training programme, will help you develop the basic scientific skills, knowledge and understanding that employers across the science disciplines are looking for.
