Mathematics GCSE at Northgate High School
The course consists of 3 written papers (equally weighted) and will follow the Foundation Programme of Study of the National Curriculum which has a grade 5 as the highest attainable grade.
Teaching and learning: These include traditional and investigational methods. Students will do both individual and group work. There is no coursework element but regular homework assignments will be set. They are expected to have the use of a scientific calculator and will be taught how to use it effectively. Mental or written methods of calculation will be revisited frequently for the non-calculator paper.
Subject specific entry requirements: This one year GCSE course is provided for students who aim to improve on their previous GCSE Mathematics grades 3 or 4. It is not suitable for anyone who already has a grade 5 or above.
A GCSE grade C in Mathematics (grade 4 in the new system) is essential for teaching and many other careers and greatly extends opportunities in employment and further/higher education at 17+ and 18+.
