Salon Management (Level 3) at New College Swindon

Course description

Through this qualification you will research, monitor and recommend improvements to; the health and safety practices in your salon, the effective running of your business, the important area of human resource management and marketing for the hair and beauty sector.

The VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Salon Management (QCF) is a qualification that has been specifically designed for stylists and therapist working in the hair and beauty related industries, who wish to move into first-line salon management.

Course content

The course will be delivered in two sessions, for 18 weeks within the academic year. One session of theory based delivery, one session where students will be required to complete work experience within the Distinction Salon reception and dispensary plus helping with the organisation of the department end of year show.

Entry requirements

You must hold as a minimum a level 3 qualification in your subject specialism or provide evidence of sufficient recent industry experience. This will be subject to interview and trade test to determine prior learning. You must also hold 5 GCSEs at grade C including English and maths


Through this qualification you will plan the management of products and services for your salon by; analysing data for planning purposes, setting operational objectives, monitoring working practices, evaluating stock control and equipment levels and providing recommendations to increase salon revenue.

The qualification is assessed through a range of methods including assignments, projects, exams, presentations and salon management observations. A significant amount of independent research is required for each unit. You will need to be able to produce referenced, word-processed assignments to agreed deadlines. The information gathered will build your own portfolio of evidence. You will work closely with your tutor who will regularly check and discuss your progress.

Distinction Hair and Beauty Salons offer you the opportunity to study in a realistic working environment where clients pay for their treatments and services. You must be prepared to work as Distinction salon receptionist to manage the smooth running of the Hair and Beauty Salons. Students employed within their specialist industry may be able to use their place of work to support the completion of their qualification.
