Engineering BTEC Level 3 180 Credit Extended Diploma at Doncaster College

Course description

The programme of study will offer the students the chance to broaden their knowledge of both mechanical and Electrical/Electronic Engineering giving them an extended knowledge base for further study or to gain employment within the engineering sector.

Successful completion of this programme of study could lead to progression to Btec Level 5 HND in Engineering.

Course content

The course will consist of 18 units, (9 of which achieved through the 90 credit diploma), the additional 9 to be delivered over one year.

  • 1 mandatory unit (double credits)
  • 8 optional units
  • Engineering Project (double credits)
  • Electro Pneumatic and Hydraulic Systems and Devices
  • Computer Aided Drafting
  • Further Maths
  • Further Mechanical Principles
  • Further Electrical Principles
  • Selecting and Using Programmable Logic Controllers
  • Principles and Applications of Analogue Electronics
  • Three Phase Motors and Drives

The 8 optional units have been designed and developed to best suit the requirements of the local engineering employers within the area. Each of the units will give the students both theoretical knowledge and practical experience.


Entry requirements

Successful completion of BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma with a minimum of 5 units at Distinction and a further 2 at Merit grades plus  recommendation from the course leader.

All applicants are required to undertake an initial and diagnostic assessment showing an improvement on their previous scores prior to an interview with the course leader to assess their suitability for the course.



Assessment runs throughout the programme combining projects, practical work, experiments, in class tests and assignment based work.

Future opportunities

Successful students may wish to pursue further studies within engineering on the BTEC level 5 HND engineering or look for employment as an advanced apprentice with an engineering company.

Progression to a degree course at university could also be an option at this stage.
