Course description

This course is for those looking for a career in Health or Social Care sector including Care Assistants, Support Staff in Health, Care or Early Years settings.

Course content

Subjects studied include:

  • Functional Skills in English and Maths

Plus 4 units from the following:

  • Sociology and Psychology
  • Caring for Children and Young People
  • Safeguarding Adults
  • Nutrition
  • Health Promotion
  • Values and Planning
  • Physiological Disorders

English and Maths are an essential part of your studies and will help you succeed on your course. These subjects will help you develop confidence and are the key employability skills that all employers now look for when recruiting.

Entry requirements

One of the following:

  • 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English Language and Maths*
  • A relevant Level 2 qualification including GCSE English Language and Maths* at grade A*-C

*If you do not have both GCSE English Language and Maths at A*-C, we may accept one of them at Grade D in addition to your 4 GCSEs at A*-C. Functional Skills may be accepted instead of GCSE English and/or Maths. Functional Skills Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE Grade D and Level 2 to GCSE Grade C.

Adults who are aged 19+ with relevant industry experience but without the necessary qualifications are welcome to apply.

Assessment

There is a substantial amount of coursework required to complete the course. There are no examinations.

Future opportunities

Successful completion will allow progression to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care which is achieved by completing a further year at college. This is normally necessary to proceed to university where you could study Nursing, Social Work, Youth Work, Social Sciences, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Radiography or Environmental Health.

Alternatively you could progress into employment, apprenticeship or another Level 3 course.

Further information

To support your application we will ask you to bring in a school report.

You will be expected to pay for your DBS check (£45) and a T shirt for placement (approx. £10) and pay travel costs to placement. It is also recommended that 2 course textbooks are bought (approx. £22 each). You will attend two different work placements.
