Hairdressing - Level 2 at North Kent College

Course description

The Level 2 Hairdressing programme has been designed for students who have completed their Level 1 hairdressing programme and wish to progress to Level 2.(Students applying for Level 2 straight from School please see the Fast Track information).  The qualification is City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Women's Hairdressing.

Course content

Students enrolling on this programme will spend a minimum of 3 sessions in our modern well equipped hairdressing salons. You will be taught by vocational lecturers who have worked or are currently working in the hairdressing industry they therefore have a wide and current experience of the industries needs and trends. Salon skills are supported by underpinning theory knowledge. The Diploma in Hairdressing has a number of mandatory units including Health and Safety, Consultation, Shampooing and Conditioning, Cutting, Colouring and Styling hair. It also has a number of optional units for you to choose from. Your lecturer will guide you when making this choice.
Your initial training is carried out on blocks and group members before progressing onto family, friends and paying clients. You need to be prepared to work a late evening mirroring the requirements of industry.
You will be expected to behave in a highly professional manner at all times while in the salons and surrounding public areas. You will wear a uniform and will need to bring your hairdressing equipment to all salon sessions.
Functional skills in English are taught alongside the vocational skills. This is an important aspect of your programme and will help to prepare you for the next level of qualification and working in the industry
It is recommended that you find part time work or voluntary work in the hairdressing industry to support your college training.

Entry requirements

Successful completion of NWK Level 1 Certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering, Functional Skills English and ICT at minimum of Entry 3. Students will need to have a good attendance record and have proven good behaviour.


Assessment is continuous throughout the course. You will be assessed using a variety of methods including: Observation, Oral questioning, Written questioning and assignment work.

16-18 fees - no tuition fees

Students over 19 pay for tuition, and registration fees with the awarding body.

Future opportunities

Students successfully completing this programme can apply for the Level 3 programme, consider programmes in Beauty Therapy or look for opportunities in the workplace as a junior hairdresser/stylist
