Applied Science Level 2 Diploma at Oaklands College

Course description

This is a one year Level 2 Vocational Science qualification. It is equivalent to 4 GCSE's and consists of 16 units assessed over three terms. You will have the opportunity to attend several field trips to various science laboratories to enhance your learning at college. On completition you will gain a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade, which could provide a pathway to a Level 3 qualification, for example: the BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science (Forensic Science).

Course content

The course will provide technical and employability skills, knowledge and understanding for working in the applied science industry. The course includes subjects such as; Psychology, Scientific Principles, Science and the World of Work, Chemistry and Applications, Science in Medicine, Health Applications, Working in Science and Investigating a Crime Scene. Maths is an integral part of the course and is embedded in every session. Maths skills include analysis of statistical data and basic mathematical skills and concepts. You will also cover a range of science topics including; biology, chemistry and physics. You will gain further knowledge and understanding of the role of science in the workplace and develop technical skills in a variety of practical activities. All assignments will have a vocational aspect, so you will get the opportunity to see how relevant this subject is in the world of work.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of four GCSEs at Grade D or above and a proven interest in Science. The minimum qualifications required include GCSE science English and maths a grade D or above.

You should have an enthusiasm for Science and a keen attitude to work. You should be able to work independently and as part of a group. As this course is assignment and exam based, you will require good organisational and time management skills.

Assessment

You will be assessed on written assignment work, practical's, exams and oral presentations.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.

Future opportunities

Apply early to avoid disappointment. There is a high demand for this course. Students may progress on to the Level 3 Extended Diploma - provided you successfully compelted the course and meet progression criteria.

Further information

You will also complete a GCSE retake in English and/or maths qualification as part of your study programme if you do not already have a C or above in GCSE English or maths.
