Physical Education A-Level at St Clement Danes School

Course description

Aims

AS and A-level specifications in Physical Education should equip students with both a depth and breadth of knowledge, understanding and skills relating to scientific, socio-cultural and practical aspects of physical education. This will require them to: 

  • Understand how physiological and psychological states affect performance
  • Understand the key socio-cultural factors that influence people‚Äôs involvement in sport
  • Understand the role of technology in physical activity and sport
  • Refine their ability to perform effectively in physical activity and sport by developing skills and techniques and selecting and using tactics, strategies and/or compositional ideas
  • Develop their ability to analyse and evaluate to improve performance
  • Understand the contribution which physical activity makes to health and fitness

It is expected that students who choose Physical Education regularly take part or coach in one sporting activity outside school or by representing the school.

Entry requirements

Attain at least a C grade in English Language/English Literature GCSE or Mathematics GCSE. Physical Education: B or if not studied: Additional Science: B or Biology: B.

Assessment

AS Unit 1 Written exam lasting 2 hours. Marked out of 84 , worth 70% of AS level

  • Section A: Applied physiology
  • Section B: Skill acquisition and sports psychology
  • Section C: Sport and society and technology in sport

Each section will involve multiple choice questions, short answer questions and extended writing questions (28 marks)

Practical Assessment Students assessed as a performer or coach in the full sided version of one activity. Plus a written/verbal analysis of performance. This will involve Internal assessment with external moderation. The practical unit is marked out of 90 and is worth 30% of A-level.

A2

Unit 1 Written exam lasting 2 hours. Marked out of 105 , worth 35% of A-level

  • Section A: Applied anatomy and physiology
  • Section B: Skill acquisition
  • Section C: Sport and society

Each section will involve multiple choice questions, short answer questions and extended writing questions (35 marks)

Unit 2 Written exam lasting 2 hours. Marked out of 105 , worth 35% of A-level

  • Section A: Exercise physiology and biomechanics
  • Section B: Sport psychology
  • Section C: Sport and society and technology in sport

Each section will involve multiple choice questions, short answer questions and extended writing questions (35 marks)

Practical Assessment Students assessed as a performer or coach in the full sided version of one activity. Plus a written/verbal analysis of performance. This will involve Internal assessment with external moderation. The practical unit is marked out of 90 and is worth 30% of A-level
