Canine First Aid at Duchy College

Course description

This one day course has been developed for dog owners, individuals working in boarding or rehoming kennels, dog walkers/sitters and dog groomers in particular.  

The course costs £100 without funding, but if you are 19+ and working more than eight hours per week in Cornwall, recent European Social  Fund (ESF) funding means that you will only pay £30 per day*. Get in touch to find out more.

Course content

The course covers some common first aid problems that you may come across when working with canines, and includes both theory and practical elements. There will be a presentation, a workbook to complete and some practical sessions which will help you to administer basic first aid.

The modules include:

  • Principles of first aid, including legal requirements and limitations

  • The first aid kit, including customizations

  • Approach and assessment of the situation

  • Common emergencies including shock, seizures electrocution, dislocation/fractures and haemorrhage

  • Common problems with geriatric dogs

Future opportunities

Working with animals means that you need to be prepared, and having basic first aid knowledge could save a life.  As well as giving you more confidence in your current job role, having basic first aid skills could also make you more employable in the future.
