Mathematics AS and A Level at Coleg y Cymoedd

Course description

This subject is part of the full time A level Programme. To apply for this subject you need to apply for the A Level or Combined Programme A Level Programme - You will need to choose 3 or 4 AS Levels to study the A Level Programme Combined Programme - You will need to choose 1 or 2 AS Levels combined with a vocational option. Vocational options include: Applied Science, IT, Business, Criminology, Law, Sports and Exercise Sciences, or Health and Social Care.

The course is designed to deepen your understanding and promote confidence in your use of mathematics. Progression through the course will enable you to develop your abilities to reason logically using mathematical proof.

Course content

The AS Modules are Core 1 (C1), Core 2 (C2) and Mechanics 1 (M1). These modules will cover:

Surds, Algebra, Coordinate Geometry, Differentiation and Functions. Integration, Sequences and Series, Trigonometry, Exponentials and Logarithms, Equations of Circles, Arcs/Sectors/Segments, Integration, Trapezium Rule, Forces and Motion, Friction, Momentum and Impulse, Moments.

At A2 you will study Core 3 (C3), Core 4 (C4) and Mechanics 2 (M2). These modules will cover:

Differentiation, Integration, Trigonometry and Functions, Iterative Methods, Simpson’s Rule, Binomial Series, Volume of Revolution, Vectors and Differential Equations, Forces and Motion, Work, Energy and Power.

Entry requirements

You will require 5 GCSEs at Grades A*- C including a grade B or above in Mathematics.

You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.

Assessment

You will be assessed by 100% examination.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course many learners apply to and are offered places at university finding that Maths is useful for many degree courses, especially science, engineering, business and economics.
