English Literature AS & A Level at Coloma Convent Girls' School

Course description

The aims of this specification are to enable you to develop your interest in and enjoyment of literature and literary studies as you:

  • Read widely and independently
  • Engage creatively with a substantial body of texts and different ways of responding to them
  • Develop and effectively apply your knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation in writing
  • Explore the contexts of the texts you are reading and others’ interpretations

Minimum Entry Requirements

The chosen pathway requirements, and at least Grade 6 in both English and English Literature at GCSE.

Assessment

AS

  • Component 01: Shakespeare and Poetry Pre 1900
    50% of AS level 
    This year’s students are studying Chaucer’s The Merchant’s Prologue and Tale and either Hamlet or The Tempest 
  • Component 02 Drama and Prose Post 1900
    50% of AS level 
    Students this year are studying A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams and Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby as well as a range of unseen prose. 

A Level

  • Component 01 Shakespeare and Poetry Pre 1900
    40% of A level
  • Component 02 Comparative and Contextual Study
    40% of A level
  • Component 03 Coursework
    20% of A level

All exams are closed book.
