Drama and Theatre Studies (Linear) A Level at Redland Green School

Course description

This course is designed to provide a balance across a range of learning activities. The course combines exploring plays, creating theatre, the performing of plays, the analysis of theatre and the critical evaluation of all these elements. Year 1 introduces you to the content of plays written for the theatre and offers you the chance to demonstrate your skills in a performance environment. During Year 2, you will be required to create a unique and original piece of theatre and to study one set play text and one prescribed historical period of theatrical development.

Course content

Drama and Theatre should enable students to:

  • develop and apply an informed, analytical framework for making, performing, interpreting and understanding drama and theatre
  • understand the place of relevant theoretical research in informing the processes and practices involved in creating theatre and the place of practical exploration in informing theoretical knowledge of drama and theatre
  • develop an understanding and appreciation of how the social, cultural and historical contexts of performance texts have influenced the development of drama and theatre
  • understand the practices used in twenty-first century theatre making experience a range of opportunities to create theatre, both published text-based and devised work
  • participate as a theatre maker1 and as an audience member in live theatre

This qualification also provides opportunities for developing the key skills listed below:

Entry requirements

A minimum grade of a C at GCSE drama or a minimum of a pass at Performing Arts BTEC level 2


Component 1: Theatre Workshop; Internally assessed, externally moderated. Learners may choose to be assessed on either acting or design in this component.   Learners participate in the creation, development and performance of a text and must produce a creative process log.


Component 2: Text in Action; Externally assessed by a visiting examiner. Learners may choose to be assessed on either acting or design in this component.   Learners participate in the creation, development and performance of devised piece using the techniques and working methods of a theatre practitioner supplied by the exam board


Component 3: Text in Performance; Written examination 40% of qualification:

  • Section A: Two questions, based on two set texts supplied by the exam board
  • Section B: One question based on a 10 minute extract from a text. Learners must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the extract within the context of the whole text. The text is to be confirmed.

Future opportunities

Gaining a qualification in drama and theatre studies will allow you to continue to study drama at a higher level at university or a specialist training college, or to go directly into employment as a performer.

An A level in drama and theatre studies will also enable you to access all other non-related degree courses.
