Land Based Studies at Derwen College

Course description

The Land Based Studies department offers a range of subjects including animal care, horticulture, conservation and customer service which you will be able to experience through your individual learning programme.

Course content

In Land Based Studies you will work in a variety of settings and learn conservation skills. You will look after the animals on the College smallholding.

Derwen College has an extensive woodland area where you will learn about animal and plant conservation. In the smallholding you can work with small animals including guinea pigs and rabbits. You can also work with the not so little animals, including pigs and alpacas!

In Land Based Studies you will work in areas where we welcome visitors to Derwen College. The Garden Centre has a shop and a plant display area. You will plant and nurture a variety of nursery stock, work in the greenhouses and polytunnels and grow fruit and vegetables for use in the Derwen food production areas. You will talk to visitors and help them to choose and purchase stock for their gardens.

You will help to provide other services, including car valeting, and the recycling services for the college.

The curriculum in the Land Based Studies Department is split into four areas (animal care, horticulture, conservation, customer service). You can access some or all of these as part of your individual learning programmes. You will have the opportunity to carry out accreditation in these subject areas, from Entry Level 2 to Level 2, depending on your individual needs.
