Physical Education A Level at Lady Lumley's School

Course description

This course covers many ideas and concepts introduced during the ks4 curriculum. You will gain further knowledge and understanding of the importance of exercise and activity to your personal, social and mental health and to your well being. Sport will be studied in a social, cultural, moral and global context. All these aspects affect participation and provision for sport and physical activity.

Course content

Students will be assessed in their ability to perform and evaluate what is good practice in practical demonstrations.

• 2. Skill acquisition

• 3. Sport and society

• 4. Biomechanical movement

• 5. Sport psychology

• 6. Sport and society and the role of technology in physical activity and sport

Entry requirements

This course is suitable for students who have achieved grade ‘C’ or above in GCSE PE.


The course will be assessed through an end of unit written paper (70%) and also through practical demonstration (30%) / role as a coach / official. You do not necessarily have to be an exceptional performer as long as you can understand what constitutes good practice in others.

Future opportunities

After completing the course many students choose to further their studies at University, with a variety of sports related courses. Careers in teaching, leisure management, coaching, personal fitness and physiotherapy await successful candidates.
