Course description

History is a subject that allows students to strengthen and broaden their knowledge and understanding of the cultures and traditions of Wales and to set this in a wider British, European and World context. Students will study the history of Wales and England, c.1880-1980 (Period Study) and Nazi Germany, c.1933-1945 (Depth Study).

Entry requirements

A GCSE in History is not required but it is expected that potential candidates have achieved GCSE Grade C in English.

Assessment

HY1: 30% 1 hour 40 min written paper - Two structured questions, from a choice of four
HY2: 20% 1 hour 20 min written paper - One set of questions, based on the evaluation of historical sources and interpretations, from a choice of two
HY3: 20% Internal Assessment - Submission of an internally-set assignment, of between 3000 – 4000 words, focussing on a specific historical problem or issue arising from the depth study
HY4: 30% 2 hours 30 min Written Paper - One open-ended essay question from a choice of two, arising from the Period Study One open-ended essay question from a choice of two, arising from the In-depth Study

Future opportunities

History helps develop qualities of perception and judgement and provides a distinctive education by giving students a sense of the past, an awareness of the development of differing values, systems and societies and the inculcation of critical yet tolerant personal attitudes. History's ability to promote understanding between cultures and between national traditions remains as important as ever.
