Chemistry at Ribston Hall High School
This specification is intended to follow on directly from GCSE and allows students to explore further those topics they have encountered with their KS4 programme of study. There is plenty of opportunity to carry out practical work and the Department is well equipped for this. Students enjoy a range of additional activities, trips and lectures to supplement the core curriculum and all are invited to take part in the Senior Chemistry Society.
Year 12: Physical Chemistry
Including atomic structure, amount of substance, bonding, enrgetics, kinetics, chemical equilibrium, and la Chantelier's principle
Year 13: Including thermodynamics, rate equations, the equilibrium constant, electrode potentials and electrochemical cells
Including periodcity, Group 2 alkaline earth metals, Group 7(17) the halogens Including properties of Period 3 elements and their oxides, transition metals, reactions of ions In aqueous solution.
Including introduction to organic chemistry, alkanes, halogen alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, organic analysis Including optical isomerism aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives, aromatic chemistry, amines, polymers. amino adds, proteins and DNA, organic synthesis, NMR spectroscopy, chromatography
Chemistry: Grade B or above, or Core and Additional Science: Grades A and B, the A Grade in either Core or Additional Science.
Practicals Chemistry, like all Sciences, is a practical subject. Throughout the course students will carry out practical activities including: • Measuring energy changes In chemical reactions • Tests for Identifying different types of compound • Different methods for measuring rate of reaction • Studying electrochemical cells • Preparation of organic solids and liquids • An advanced form of chromatography for more accurate results Assessment There is no coursework on this course. However, performance during practicals will be assessed.
