Mathematics GCSE at Samuel Lister Academy
Maths GCSE is a core subject. The achievement of a grade C or above at this subject is a requirement for many jobs and courses. Studying Maths will help you to understand the world better, help you manage your finances and tackle problems logically and systematically.
- Learning useful numerical skills for everyday life, learning quickly how to work things out when there is no calculator to hand.
- Discovering how to handle data in a world increasingly focussed on information.
- Understanding how to solve problems in shape and space,
- Developing some of the skills necessary to study Maths at a higher level.
Maths is a core subject and therefore no formal qualifications are needed to study at this level.
You will be assessed through examinations and coursework.
Successful candidates can progress to further study or employment.
At Nab Wood we take the core subject of maths very seriously and consider our newly merged maths and IT department to be strength of the School. In the last few years we have recruited many new staff to the department as well as completely overhauling our teaching methods. We have found new ways of turning our students on to maths; such as our interschool maths competition which the entire School has the opportunity to enter, as well as the national maths challenge. The merger with the IT department means we are finding new ways to implement technology into students' learning.
Our IT facilities are that of any modern secondary school, but what makes our department stand out are our objectives. We want our students to go above and beyond the basic IT knowledge of word processing with all our students learning key industry standard software and an ensemble of multi media skills.
