Product Design (Textiles) A level at Valentines High School
This course has been designed to encourage students to take a broad view of design and technology and question the world around them. It will develop candidates’ capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. The department is well resourced and students make regular use of three laser cutters, a sublimation printer and a cutting edge suite of computers to realise their ideas. Creativity and rigorous independent thought are essential to succeed in this subject.
Year 12 AS Outline
Design and product analysis examination paper worth 50% of final AS grade. Exploring students understanding of a range of materials and components and how this is applied to a variety of products.
Coursework component worth 50% of the final AS grade. Students follow a portfolio approach where they explore a wide range of techniques and materials to design and make a range of different products from a wall hanging to a jacket.
Year 13 A Level Outline
At A Level students will build on their success at AS level to design products with increasing complexity and demand.
This examination paper; worth 25% of the overall A-Level grade; examines in detail the candidates thoughts and understanding of wider social issues related to responsible design and manufacture.
Coursework component worth 25% of the final A-Level grade. Students build on the wide range of skills learnt in Year 12 to create a design folder where they define their own context and go on to investigate and explore innovative and demanding solutions. They will then realise this through a range of materials and techniques.
GCSE grade B in a technology subject.
Textiles could take you into a number of exciting career paths and allow you to access further study at university. Of course there is fashion design but this course could also lead to study in interior design, fabric technology, product development, marketing and textile management.
