Course description

Who is the programme for?This Level 1 course is for students who would like a career in Art and Design.If you are looking for a course that offers a wide range of Art and Design experiences,the BTEC Level 1 Diploma will provide an excellent start to your career. The coursewill involve a great deal of practical work and you will learn about different areaswithin the creative industries during your projects.What is the programme structure?You will be given assignment briefs to work to on a range of topics. Projects willusually be about 7 weeks in length and will cover the units you need to pass the qualification.What does the programme include?Subjects will include:• 2D: drawing, painting and design work.• 3D: making 3D work in materials such as clay, wire, plaster, wood, papier mache etc.• Textiles. Hand dying, printing, etc.You will have lessons in specialist rooms, for example the textiles and 3D roomsWhat award will I achieve?BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Art and DesignThis course runs alongside the BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Creative MediaStudents without a GCSE grade C in English or maths with also study those subjects at an appropriate level.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade E or above including English, maths and preferably Art.


Your coursework is assessed throughout the year.Examining body – Edexcel

Future opportunities

Most students will progress onto a Level 2 course within the Art and Design or Media departments. This depends on successfully completing the Level 1 course and English and Maths at a suitable level.
