Production Arts (Design) BTEC Extended Diploma Level 3 at Fareham College

Course description

This advanced specialist course is for artistic students who wish to work as a Hair and Make-up Artist/Designer within the TV, film, theatre or fashion industries. 

The course offers more specilised skills such as prosthetic casting and sculpting, design drawing, along with business development and freelance skills. 

It is ideally suited to those who wish to progress onto University or other specialist courses to study specialisms at a higher level.

Course content

The course covers a wide range of disciplines that include:

  • Make-up for performers (TV, film and fashion)

  • Airbrushing (face and body)

  • Special effects make-up

  • Prosthetic making and application

  • Body painting

  • Character design and application methods

  • Period make-up design and application

  • Hair styling and dressing for performers

  • Theatrical make-up and hair styling

  • Fantasy hair design and styling

  • Mask making

  • Wig maintenance and styling

  • Wig making

  • Design drawing development

  • Working freelance in the production arts

  • Performing arts business

  • Production arts workshop to support in performance

  • Production for theatre performance


Entry requirements

  • BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Production Arts (Make-up), 
  • 5 GCSEs at grade A* – C including English and maths. 
  • GCSE Art is desirable or an Art portfolio is required to demonstrate artistic skill. 


You will develop an artistic portfolio of work including creative sketchbooks that demonstrate your research and design process aimed towards Higher Education interviews. 

Written assignments also form a key part of this qualification.  You will also build a unique professional portfolio demonstrating your creativity and skill which will support you in your chosen progression route on completion of this course.


Future opportunities

On completion of this qualification you would look to progress into Higher Education or other specialist courses to study this specialism further. 

Continuous training is a feature of this profession if you want to develop a specialist career.

This qualification will provide you with a skills set for potential employment as a Trainee Hair and Make-up Artist, Wigs Assistant, Bridal Hair and Make-up Artist or a Make-up Artist for cosmetics companies such as MAC and Bobbi Brown.

Further development from the Extended Diploma could lead to a career as a Hair and Make-up Supervisor/Designer, Wigs Master/Mistress or specialist careers such as Special Effects Make-up Artist, Prosthetics Artist or Wig Maker.


Further information

You will be asked to organise your own models for assessments and showcase work. 

This will also include independently sourcing work experience opportunities through local theatres, events and embracing experiences offered to you as part of your course. 

This may include working some evenings and weekend but the dates will be provided in advance. 

There will also be educational visits to the theatre, Charles Fox, exhibitions and workshops (additional cost).
