Apprenticeship Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing or Barbering at County Training - Shropshire Council
This course gives learners an opportunity to gain practical skills and knowledge of hairdressing. It will make give a head-start to the apprenticeship qualifications.
Hairdressing is a creative industry, influenced by ever-changing fashion trends. Those working in this sector have great people skills, often with a passion for style and looking good.
This Apprenticeship covers all the basics of hairdressing. As a Hairdressing apprentice, you’ll work as a salon junior, assisting senior staff while training as a junior stylist.
Duties are likely to include booking appointments, shampooing, conditioning, drying and styling hair, and mixing and applying hair colouring. You’ll study hairdressing topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin, and the principles of hair colour selection – there’s also the option to learn about promoting products, perming, or relaxing different types of hair.
The barbering course will teach you all about the cutting and styling of men and boys hair, learning how to give client consultations, cut hair, trim and shape facial hair and shampoo and condition hair and scalp. These courses are work-based qualifications, so you will be learning through on-the-job practical training, providing you with the relevant skills and experience in order to continually progress your career.
The level 2 courses will last between 12 and 24 months
Through an Apprenticeship you will work towards a framework of qualifications which will include:
- Intermediate Apprenticeship Level 2 in Hairdressing
- Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing
- Level 1 Functional Skills in English, Maths and Information Technology
- Employment Rights and Responsibilities
Before you can start this course, you will need to have a relevant paid work placement of at least 30 hours per week. There may be existing placements available or County Training can provide you with support to find a placement. This may be through an interview, some support with writing applications or preparing a CV, or even through work-experience placements.
Examination, Practical Assessment and Coursework
Progression to Level 3, AS/A2 Level, AVCE, BTEC Award, Advanced Diploma Level 3, Progression Diploma Level 3, NVQ 3, Advanced Apprenticeship in related subjects, Access to HE.
After completing the intermediate Apprenticeship, it is likely you will be encouraged to move on to the Advanced Apprenticeship. Hair stylists need to keep up to date with new trends, so there are always opportunities for further training or the chance to specialise in a certain area e.g. colouring. If you want to progress to a higher level you could do a foundation degree in hairdressing and salon management and even move on to complete a BA (Hons) in this subject area. Often qualified hairdressers and barbers take the leap into setting up their own business and take up management training. Others train to become assessors and tutors – there are plenty of exciting paths for those serious about a career in the hairdressing and barbering industry.
