Religious Studies AQA Advanced GCE at Chiswick School
In Philosophy in Year 12 we will be studying the arguments for the existence of God, the rise of atheism and post modernity, origins of the universe. In Year 13 we study issues surrounding thinking and language, the concept of proof and whether or not heaven can exist. In Ethics we will be studying how people make the right choice in different situations. We look at the Utilitarian theories of Bentham and Mills. We examine the issues of abortion and euthanasia in depth and consider what the loving thing to do is in these cases. Students participate in a study of ethical theories ranging from natural law theory to hybrid systems. Students will develop their understanding of what makes an act immoral , right or wrong. Yer 13 cites A Level Students the opportunity to apply these theories to the modern world, in particular to the context of medical ethics.
5 A*-C grades including 4 or 5 in Maths and 5 in English Language if part of a Mixed Pathway or 8 A*-C including 4 or 5 in Maths and 5 in English Language if part of a A Level Pathway. B grade or grade 6 in the A level chosen to study.
This is a great course for developing the analytical skills needed in Law, English, Sociology, History, Politics and, of course, Philosophy. Philosophy and Ethics is on the suggested A levels for both Oxford and Cambridge for a variety of their courses.
