Introduction to the Hospitality Industry Diploma Level 1 at City College Plymouth

Course description

This study programme will give you a basic introduction to the hospitality and catering industry. Through practical work in our training kitchens and retail food outlets you will learn, develop and practice basic catering and food and beverage service skills. You will find out about food hygiene and safety, customer service and the importance of teamwork, and apply this within our busy restaurant and café environments.   Kit and uniform for this course will be provided by the College for all 16-18 year olds. You will need to pay a deposit of £100, which will be refundable on the successful completion of your course.

Course content

The main subjects taught include: 
• introduction to catering and hospitality industry 
• basic food production and cooking
• serving food
• food safety
• preparing and serving dishes
• introduction to healthy eating.

Your individualised study programme will be made up of the following four areas:

  • the qualification you are studying
  • English and maths
  • work experience
  • other activities to develop your personal skills e.g. preparing you for employment, training or higher/further education.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of three GCSEs grade D to F to enrol on this course. 


You will be assessed on all practical skills in the teaching kitchens and restaurant and will receive the full support of our teaching team in compiling your portfolio of knowledge. 

Future opportunities

On successful completion you may progress to the Professional Chef or Food Service Diploma at the College, or employment in the industry via an Apprenticeship.
