Biology AS/A Level at Castell Alun High School

Course description

The course aims to develop a lifelong interest in and enjoyment of the study of living organisms, promoting respect for all forms of life. Students will develop both an understanding of biological facts and principles, and an appreciation of their significance in the living world.
 
The Biology AS course consists of 3 units, 2 theory units worth 20% each and 1 practical unit worth 10%. You will be studying basic biochemistry and organisation ensuring a smooth transition from GCSE.
 
The second unit explores biodiversity through physiological adaptation in a number or organisms. There is a practical skills assessment of performance in experiments over a period of time and drawing of specimens using a microscope.
 
The A level course includes the AS units and 2 theory units worth 20% each and 1 practical unit worth 10%. You will look at energy release, microbiology and homeostasis in various organisms. You will be able to understand genetics, evolution and some environmental issues. The practical assessment is similar to the AS practical but is related to the A level course content.
 
Biology A level is an essential subject to take if you are planning to study
  • Medicine
  • Dentistry
  • Veterinary Medicine, or
  • other biomedical courses such as Physiotherapy.
