Diploma in Dental Nursing Level 3 at City Training Services

Course description

This qualification is aimed at individuals who want to work as dental nurses, the role of the dental nurse is regulated by the General Dental Council.  An individual may be able to register with the GDC upon satisfactory completion of a registerable qualification, which includes the L3 Diploma in dental Nursing.  The role of the dental Nurse is to provide ‘chair side support’ for the dentists, dental therapists, hygienists and technicians.

Course content

The apprenticeship framework comprises of

  • Work based assessment (NVQ Level 2 & 3)
  • Underpinning knowledge (exam)
  • Functional skills (projects and tests)
  • Extended award in Employment and Personal learning Skills

Entry requirements

GCSE A to C in Maths, English or equivalent preferred


The NVQ is delivered through practical and written knowledge assessments which are carried out in the workplace and apprentices will be required to produce work and build an e-portfolio of evidence through blended learning to complete the qualifications.  College attendance is only required for Functional Skills and to complete the exam for the Diploma in dental nursing.

Future opportunities

There are a range of post registration courses available to dental nurses looking to progress in their sector, they may include a range of higher education qualifications or other work-related education and training to support continuing profession development.

  • Certificate in Oral Health Education
  • Certificate in Special Care Dental Nursing
  • Certificate in Orthodontic Nursing
  • Certificate in Dental Radiography
