Sport (Performance and Excellence) BTEC Level 3 Diploma at Brockenhurst College

Course description

The Sport Performance and Excellence course includes both theory and practical sport.

It will test your sporting knowledge and your own practical ability by covering anatomy, physiology, sports psychology, sports coaching, sports nutrition and technical and tactical sports understanding.

This course particularly suits those wanting a more practical sports course and those maybe aspiring to go on to higher education or enter employment in sports coaching, sports development and sports management. 

The Level 3 Diploma in Sport consists of 13 Units and is equivalent to 2 A Levels.

• Work Experience in Sport

You will learn though a well-balanced range of methods, which combines practical skills with theoretical knowledge. Your lessons will take place in classrooms and using the range of college sports facilities both indoor in the fitness suite or sports hall and outdoor on the astro, tennis courts or fields.

In addition to the course you may also have the opportunity to complete Sports Therapy, Sports Leaders, Level 1 Coaching Qualifications, First Aid, CYQ Fitness Instructor and NPLQ Lifeguard qualifications.

A key part of the course is to complete a work experience unit and a placement where you will gain an insight into working in Sport as a PE Teacher, Sports Coach, Sports Leader, Sports Development Officer etc.

We have excellent partnerships with local employers so further opportunities to gain work experience in the sports industry through extra voluntary placements is always available.

Alongside your course you will have the opportunity to study additional A Level subjects and English and/or Maths GCSE to improve your skills in these vital subjects.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs grade C (including English and Mathematics)

Assessment

All units are assessed through assignments in a variety of formats; these include written reports, posters, practical sports, demonstrations, group tasks, interviews, practical coaching, presentations, work experience, projects.

There is no final written examination for this course as you achieve your qualification though continuous assessment.

Financial information

Sports students will be expected to wear the College sports kit for lessons with the minimum package costing approximately £40.

There is a course textbook to support your learning which is approximately £25.

As part of the work experience unit, please be aware that if you are required to work in schools, the cost of the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is approximately £50 which is a requirement.

Future opportunities

This course prepares students for employment or higher education in sports coaching, physical education, fitness instruction, sports development, sports management, and sport and exercise science.

Our students have gone on to some excellent sporting universities from this course and continuing on to higher education is an extremely common choice.
