Product Design A Level at South Axholme Academy

Course description

If you have enjoyed the innovation of GCSE Product Design or the technical challenge of Engineering and would like to develop and sustain these skills then this is the course for you. You will develop and build on skills learnt during GCSE and develop critical evaluation skills in technical, aesthetic, ethical, economic, environmental, sustainable, social, cultural and entrepreneurial contexts. Studying Product Design offers a chance for you to improve the way we live in many ways, be it technically, commercially or sustainably. Shape, colour, user perception, usability and sustainability are just some of the elements you will learn to work with.

Course content

At AS in unit 1 you will study the core technical topics of Materials and Components, Design and Market Influences and Processes and Manufacture. The second unit is a design-and-make unit where knowledge of the AS subject content is applied to the design and making of the candidates' own project(s).

At A2 in unit 3 you will develop further a deep understanding of Materials and Components, Design and Market Influences and Processes and Manufacture. The fourth unit is a design-and-make unit where knowledge of the AS and A2 subject content is applied to the design and manufacture of candidates' own project(s).

Entry requirements

You should have a minimum of six GCSEs at A*-C or equivalent, including English and Maths.

Assessment

At AS you will complete one written examination and a Design and Making task(s). Each counts 50%.

For A Level, you will complete one written examination and a Design and Making task(s). Each counts 50%.
