Science - BTEC Extended Diploma in Forensic Science level 3 at Kirklees College, Huddersfield Centre

Course description

The course combines practical and theoretical
skills in chemistry, biology and physics,
alongside units in criminology and psychology.

Course content

The course focuses on the Forensic aspects
of biological, chemical and physical sciences
alongside complementary units in criminal
psychology and criminology.
You will develop practical and deductive
reasoning skills, as you study aspects of
forensic science.
 
The course includes:
• fundamentals of science,
• working in the science industry,
• criminal investigation procedures,
• genetics and genetic engineering,
• forensic fire investigation,
• forensic photography,
• statistics for science technicians,
• criminology,
• criminal psychology,
• chemical laboratory techniques.
 
AS level Biology or Chemistry is available in the
2nd year of the programme to those students
who have met their targets in the 1st year.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs with the following grades: English at grade 4 and maths at grade 3 or above, and 3 other GCSEs grade 4 or above including a science subject.

Assessment

With coursework and practical assessments.
Although there are no final examinations, your
theoretical knowledge is sometimes assessed
through short tests.
* From 2017 the syllabus will include exams.

Financial information

As a full time student you should not need to pay any course or examination fees (under 19).

There may be a cost for equipment, educational visits, printing etc.

Future opportunities

A degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in forensic science, applied science or a related area such as criminology, psychology or criminal justice studies.

You could enter employment as a science technician.
