Course overview

You will gain independent living skills which will be practiced and developed through real life practical activities, you also have the opportunity to extend your communication and social skills. Your likely transition will be supported independent living, further education, further training, or a personalised package of day services and voluntary work.

The course will prepare you with the skill sets required for living in shared accommodation, supported or independent living.

What are the course details?

This flexible course offers personalised study programmes aimed to help you gain skills that you will need in order to prepare you fully for independent or supported living when you move on from College. This will include home management skills, budgeting and money management, basic cookery skills and kitchen hygiene, community access and understanding local amenities, independent travel training, personal safety, enterprise and work experience.

Is the course for me?

This course will provide you with skills required when preparing for living in shared accommodation, supported or independent living. The course also helps you with qualifications that could help you move on to further study. These include communication, english, maths,  creative media and expressive art, retail (including Ebay shop), PSHE, horticulture, small animal care, Duke of Edinburgh Award, sport, music and drama.

Independent living skills are the focus of this course, but you will also have access to other course options depending on your personal interests and skills. There are plenty of activities to get involved in outside of sessions that will develop your social and communication skills.

Course content

What will I learn?

You will develop independent living skills in preparation for a change in living arrangements or to become more independent at home. Students can also access work experience, both at College and
externally, and work towards specific vocational qualifications.

We will also support you to gain qualifications in Functional Skills such as English, Maths and ICT at an appropriate level.

How will I learn?

You will do work on your own and in groups, portfolio building, role play, practical activities, visits into the local community and more formal lessons.

What can I progress to?

Students who complete this course can either progress further with their independence studies or can progress onto our Skills for Work Course.
