Religious Studies AS Level and A Level at Mayflower High School
The course is designed to enable students to continue to develop interest and enthusiasm for a rigorous study of religion. It encourages students to develop their understanding of the modern world and establish a deeper knowledge and appreciation of world religious thought.
The course gives students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills to contemporary issues, with a focus on inspiring and motivating students, while challenging and developing their perceptions of different world religions. It places an emphasis on responding critically to a wealth of philosophical, ethical and religious concepts, equipping them with analytical skills readily transferable to other subjects.
What will I study at AS Level?
The course is the popular OCR syllabus in Philosophy, Religion & Ethics and Development in Christian Thought. Within these three elements of the course, the following topics will be studied.
Philosophy: Ancient Green Influences; Soul, mind and body; Life after death; Religious Experience; Existence of God; Challenges to Belief.
Religion and Ethics: Normative ethical theories; Applied ethics; sex and sexuality, euthanasia; Ethical language.
Development in Christian Thought: Human nature and the purpose of life; The self and immortality; Knowledge and revelation of God; Religious writings; Jesus Christ.
What will I study at A Level?
Philosophy: The nature of God; Religious language; 20th Century perspectives.
Religion and Ethics: Mta Ethics; Freewill and Conscience; Developments in ethical thought.
Development in Christian Thought: Challenges and responses to secularism; Pluralism in theology and society; Gender in theology and society.
CAPS of 40 points plus Grade B in GCSE Religious Studies.
