Design: Product A level at The Ecclesbourne School

Course description

The specification for this course is designed to encourage you to develop a broad view of design and technology, develop your capacity to design and make products, appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing and design, and propose and realise prototype solutions to design problems that can be manufactured and produced in quantity on a commercial basis. If you are practical and creative, then this could be the
choice for you.
The course at AS consists of two units. In unit 1, ‘Materials, Components and Application,’ you will be required to develop an understanding of the physical and mechanical properties of a broad range of materials and components. You will understand why these are used in specific applications with particular emphasis on the life-cycle of products including manufacture, use and disposal. Unit 2 is
a design-and -make module where you will be required to design and produce a project of your choice.
The course at A2 follows the same pattern with Unit 3 ‘Design and Manufacture’ enabling you to better understand design and market influences, as well as processes and manufacture. Unit 4 is again a design-and-make module.
