Outdoor Adventure and Water Sports (Level 3) at New College Swindon

Course description

These Courses are designed to meet the needs of students wishing to pursue a career in Active Outdoor Activities and Outdoor Education. In the main, this is a Vocational Course with few or no exams but there are key academic areas which will need to be completed to enable the student to progress to the second year.

Course content

Year 1 - Certificate (AS Equivalent) Year 2 - Diploma (A2 Equivalent)

You will have a personal tutor who will support and guide your progress through the course.

Entry requirements

You should have at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above (English and Maths Preferred but not essential), or an equivalent qualification. Students who do not have English/Maths will be interviewed by the course leader to ascertain their suitability. For over 18s, Suitable work experience may be taken into consideration instead of formal studies.

You should be medically fit and able to take part in overnight camping expeditions, 5 day residential camps, day walks, water sports and other arduous outdoor adventurous activities.

Assessment

Currently, there are few or no exams on the Certificate or Diploma course. All Units are assessed individually via written assignments which are set throughout the year. You will be required to meet the standards of other awarding bodies in relation to practical skill assessments and exams.

Future opportunities

The course provides a good introduction to students on all aspects of Active Outdoor Sports and can assist your entry into the world of Outdoor Education by giving you the basic skills you require to start a career in this field. You can progress to the Diploma and further enhance your skills by completing a second year of study where you will have the opportunity to gain additional qualifications with other awarding bodies. At the end of the course you will have a recognised qualification and many additional skills which will be advantageous when applying for a position within the Active Outdoor Leisure sector.
