Teaching - Access to HE Diploma at Hertford Regional College

Course description

This daytime course is designed for adults (19+) who would like to return to learning, who may not have sufficient qualifications to apply to University to do a degree. Students will be in college approximately 2 days a week in lessons, however there is also a lot of "blended/home learning" (an average is approximately 10 hours per week). This leads to the Access Diploma which attracts 60 credits.

Course content

Core Skills Subjects:

Communications, Research and Core and Application of Number

Three Specialist Subjects

Education Studies (including a two week placement in a school, for which a DBS Disclosure Certificate will be required - approx cost £44), English Literature, and Psychology.

Entry requirements

Certificates or Statements of Results must be shown at the interview stage.

Science It is preference to have GCSE Science at C or above (or equivalent). If you do not have this you will need to enrol separately for GCSE Science if hoping to apply for BEd Primary (there is a separate fee for this course)


Assessment is continuous throughout the course.  A variety of assessment methods is used such as essays, presentations, reports and exams.

Financial information

f you are 19 or over on 31 August prior to starting the course and have been a permanent resident in the EU for the last three years you will pay approximately £1500 tuition fees per annum. If you are 24 or over on 31 August prior to starting the course you will pay approximately £3384 tuition fees per annum. (This was the fee for 2015 - 2016) Fees will be reviewed for 2016 – 2017. Progress on to a variety of degree courses such as BEd Primary, Education Studies, specialist subject relevant to secondary teaching, subject to a successful university application.

      Additional buses run to the College including:

      C2/C3 from Harlow                       approx 30 minutes
      310/311 from Waltham Cross      approx 17 minutes
      310/311 from Hertford                  approx 40 minutes

      Trains: The National Express East Anglia Service provides services from Broxbourne and Cheshunt stations to London Liverpool Street, Tottenham Hale, Waltham Cross, Enfield Lock, Harlow, Sawbridgeworth, Bishop’s Stortford and Stansted. 

      Example journey times:
      London Liverpool Street – Cheshunt – 20 minutes
      Stansted Mountfitchet – Broxbourne – 24 minutes

      Parking: There are limited car parking spaces on site.
