Chemistry AS A2 at Bishop Stopford CE School

Course description

The course builds on from your GCSE knowledge, whether you have done a double or triple award science qualification.

In A Level Chemistry, you will study the elements of life, from the earth to the atmosphere and develop practical skills in invesitgations. It combines well with other science subjects, and will lead to a huge range of further opportunities such as science related courses at university, and careers in research and development.

Anyone considering a career in health or medicine should check whether A Level Chemistry is required.

Course content

During Year 12 (AS) you will study 3 units:

  1. Atoms, bonds and groups.
  2. Chains, energy and resources.
  3. Skills for Chemistry.

During Year 13 (A2) you will study three further units:

  1. Rings, ploymers and analysis.
  2. Equilibria, Energetics and Elements
  3. Skills for Chemistry

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade C is the minimum entry requirement, although we recommend an average of 8 Grade C GCSEs. If you have a B or above in GCSE Science, this is a very good platform to begin A Level in Chemistry.


You will be assessed by both coursework and examinations. At AS, 80% will be assessed by examination and 20% through practical lab work.

There are no additional costs for Chemistry.
