BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport at Southmoor Academy

Course description

The BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport is intended to be an Applied General qualification for post-16 learners who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education and/or ultimately to employment in the sports sector. The course is equivalent in size to one A level and builds on the student's experiance from Key Stage 4, providing the opportunity to enhance knowledge and understanding of a broad variety of aspects within the sector.

Course content

Unit 1: Anatomy and physiology (1 hour 10 minute written exam - 33% of final grade)

Unit 2: Fitness Training and programming for Health, Sport and Well-being (coursework, assesed externally by exam board - 33% of final grade)

Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sport industry (coursework, assessed by teacher - 17% of final grade)

Unit 4: "Optional Unit" (Coursework, assessed by teacher - 17% of final grade)

Entry requirements

Students are required to have the standard Sixth Form entry requirments (5 A* - C grades including English and Maths). At least a C in science would be an advantage, and students should ideally be participating in sport regularly at club level.

Future opportunities

This qualification is designed to support progression to higher education when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A levels. The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by Higher Education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements for mnay courses. It combines well with a alrge number of subjects and supports entry into Higher Education courses in a very wide range od disciplines. For learners who wish to study an aspect of sport in HE, options include:

  • BA (Hons) in Sports Studies and Business
  • Bsc (Hons) in Sport Psychology
  • Ba (Hons) in Sports education and Special Inclusive Education
  • BA (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science

    • The Sixth Form at Southmoor is housed in a dedicated wing of Southmoor Academyl, completely refurbished and redesigned for our first intake in September 2014. Sixth formers enjoy their own café, open from 8.00am every morning and manned by our very own team of student Baristas, as well as study areas, a resource room, a computer suite, and classrooms furnished throughout with private study booths. All students have a locker to store their files in, and the newly refurbished toilets are for the exclusive use of Sixth Form students.
