Art & Design at Swanwick Hall School

Course description

COURSE STRUCTURE - YEAR 12 / AS LEVEL

Students begin the year taking part in a variety of activities that exposes them to new materials and techniques. Students experience art in many different ways, looking at a variety of artists. working both first hand and from other documented sources. By Christmas students are pulling projects together and creating their own blend of work using any/all of the materials and ideas they have done in their portfolio so far. By the end of January the coursework element of the course is completed with a final comment being produced. From February the students will begin their exam project. During this process, which ends in May, 5 hours will be set aside for controlled assessment of work. Students will be given a question to work with, which they will then produce a project of work, including a final comment. Students will exhibit both their portfolios and exams in a exhibition in June, which they will display themselves for an audience and an examiner to view.

COURSE STRUCTURE – YEAR 13 / A2 LEVEL

Students begin the course with a trip to a gallery/ event that can inform their portfolio/ coursework, which includes a written element. The written work is a 1000 word comment on work that has captured the students’ imagination and will help to inform the rest of their project. The students then work independently, showing off the skills, learnt in Year 12. Other art trips take place during the year to help take the project further. Coursework and final comment needs to be completed by the end of January. From February the students will begin their exam project. Students will be given a question to work with, which they will then produce a project of work. The final comment is produced in a 15 hour controlled assessment over a 3 week period. Students will exhibit both their portfolios and exams in June, which they will display themselves for an audience and an examiner to view.
