Law at Plume College

Course description

At AS Level the course is split into two halves each assessed by exam. The first, Unit 1, deals with the English Legal System and also law making. Topics include, criminal and civil courts, juries and lay magistrates, judicial precedent and statutory interpretation.In Unit 2 both criminal law and the law of tort are studied. The criminal content focuses on the non-fatal offences and the tort content focuses on the law of negligence. Students will also visit Chelmsford Magistrates Court to see law in action.

At A2 Level the course is again split into two halves, each assessed by exam. The A2 course focuses almost exclusively on criminal law. Unit 3, deals with fatal and non-fatal offences and some of the defences to these crimes. Unit 4 is a study of the law regarding property (theft, robbery, burglary, fraud, criminal damage). It also includes a critical evaluation of how the law works and how judges make the law. Students will visit Chelmsford Crown Court to observe criminal cases taking place.
