Media Studies AS/A Level 3 at The John Wallis Church of England Academy

Course description

AS: A one year course covering two units of study. Unit 1 looks at Investigating the Media covering Broadcasting (TV and Film), Digital/web-based media (e-media) and Print (Magazines and Newspapers) while studying a range of key concepts. Unit 2 is practical based with externally set briefs focusing on two of the three areas studied in Unit 1.
A2: A two year course building on the skills covered in year 1. Unit 3 looks at critical perspectives in the Media encouraging analysis in Media Debates and Theories over a range of different topics. Unit 4 is a practical module with a critical investigation and a linked practical piece to the work studied in Unit 3.

AS:
Unit 1: 2 hour written examination
Unit 2: Practical coursework, internally assessed and externally moderated
A2:
Unit 3: 2 hour written examination
Unit 4: Practical coursework, internally assessed and externally moderated
 

Entry requirements

Grade C and above in English Language

Future opportunities

Wide and varied: Film, Television, Print, radio, Animation, Computer Gaming, Publishing, Advertising, Events Management etc. Enhances career opportunities into teaching, youth work and Journalism. You could take this course with other advanced level courses such as English, to prepare for higher education in Media-related courses, related courses in the Arts or Humanities, or more general higher education courses. With Further training, you could go into a job related to media such as a Journalist, News Reporter, TV Producer, Public Relations Officer The course also helps you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the media and Communication sectors
