Uniformed Services Level 1 Diploma at West Herts College

Course description

Are you looking for excitement, challenge and prospects? This course is an introduction to the public services – one of most varied career options you could choose. You’ll learn a variety of life and employability skills, preparing you for further study and new opportunities.

Course content

Outdoor activities and class-based projects will help you develop a variety of new skills. It’s also very hands on – with projects including:

  • Adventurous outdoor activities

  • Employment opportunities in uniformed services

  • Well-being and physical fitness – regimental fitness training

  • Team working skills

  • Self discipline and development

  • Map reading and orientation

  • Health and safety and emergency care

Visits by the Marines will put you through your paces on a fitness training programme, with marching and drills building self discipline and working with radios developing communication and team work.

You’ll have the opportunity to take part in local community projects and will learn about the different public services sectors with visits to HMS Westminster, in London, to find out more about the navy, plus talks by the army and police. As part of your projects you will plan and risk assess activities including caving and rock climbing.

Alongside your course you’ll study English and maths and take part in GAP work placements to develop your confidence and readiness for employment.

Entry requirements

A great work ethic and passion for helping others will go a long way towards success. You will also be required to attend a course introduction meeting.

Future opportunities

You can progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Public Services and, with further study and training, start your career in the public or emergency services.
