Sports Coaching at The Kingsway Academy

Course description

Qualifications in Year 12: Level I Award in Principles and Preparations of Coaching Sport, FA Level I Award in Coaching Football, Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Preparations of Coaching Sport, Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Activity Leadership, Level 2 Certificate in Leisure Operations, Level 2 Employment Awareness. Qualifications in Year 13: FA Level 2 Leadership through Football, FA Level 2 Award in coaching Football, Level 2 Award in Multi-Skills Development in Sport, Level 3 Award in Principles and Preparations of Coaching Sport, Level 3 Employment Awareness, Level 3 Certificate in Leisure Management. Students develop communication and leadership skills during the programme, whilst working as part of a close knit team. As a coach, time management and organisation skills are important. These skills are developed during work placements in local primary schools and at sporting events. In order to engage players, a coach must motivate and be enthusiastic; students are taught a variety of motivational techniques. Delivering a structured coaching session requires planning and must be progressive to challenge and engage participants; students gain these skills during four hours practical sessions each week. All skills gained on this course are key transferrable skills desired most by industry employers.

This unique programme covers a broad range of topics including: Principles and preparations of coaching sport, How to plan and deliver a structured football coaching session, Leadership in sport, First aid and child protection, Dealing with customers and clients and Work placements- plus much more

Entry requirements

GCSE grades D and E


Developed in partnership with industry experts the First4Sport Level 2 and 3 qualifications (QCF) provide learners with both the theoretical and practical aspects around coaching sport. The qualification is ideal for those wishing to develop as a sports coach with a variety of pathways in to the sports industry. Students will be assessed using a variety of methods on an on-going basis throughout the duration of the programme and are required to complete the First4Sport National Sports Coaching portfolio. During practical lessons, students will receive formative assessment sheets and verbal feedback to aide their coaching development. Work placements are organised by Little League Sports and a minimum of 8 hours of work placements per week is required as part of this programme. In order to pass the FA level 1 and 2, students will be required to deliver a coaching sessions and meet the assessment criteria.

Further information

A Little League Sports tracksuit is provided completely free of charge. Students will be given the opportunity to meet sports professionals and participate in a number of coaching trips.
