Health and Social Care A Level at Thorpe St Andrew School and Sixth Form
This course aims to develop and sustain an interest in the Care Sector which includes health, early years care, education and social care. You will acquire knowledge and understanding of the Care Sector and the issues which affect it. You will develop skills which will enable you to make an effective contribution to the Care Sector. This will also include some practical experience.

Unit 1 – Promoting Quality Care
To learn the importance of making sure that all people have access to the services they need and ensuring that they do not experience discrimination.
Unit 2 – Communication in Care Settings
Investigates the different types of communication skills and how they can be used to encourage effective communication.
Unit 3 – Promoting Good Health
Investigates the range of lifestyle choices and social factors which influence health and well being.
Unit 11 – Understanding Human Behaviour and Development
This provides an understanding of the influences that can affect growth and development and of the concepts and theories that can be used to explain human behaviour across different life stages.
Unit 10 – Care Practice and Provision
Students carry out an investigation to show how demographic factors influence the organisation and provision of health, social care and early years services in the local area.
Unit 16 – Research Methods in Health
Students investigate an area of interest related to the Care Sector and write a report about their findings.

There is access to higher education courses at degree level. The subject is of particular relevance to a wide range of Health, Social Care or Early Years degrees such as Teaching, Nursing and Social Work. A range of employment opportunities are opened up in Social Services, Care of Children and the Elderly and Administration. Some direct entry employment is combined with further training.
