BTEC in Business Studies at Verulam School

Course description

Candidates are expected to develop a critical understanding of contemporary business organisations by acquiring a range of important and transferable skills. These skills are: – manipulating data in a variety of forms and interpreting their results; making judgments and justified recommendations on the basis of available evidence; carrying out research; challenging assumptions and report writing.

Course outline

The 60-credit BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma extends the specialist work-related focus of the BTEC Level 3 Certificate and covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the appropriate vocational sector. The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma offers greater flexibility and a choice of emphasis through the optional units. It is equivalent to one GCE A Level.

Year 12

Unit 1: The Business Environment: Give learners the fundamental knowledge of a range of business organisations, and the many factors that shape the nature of organisations operating in an increasingly complex business world.

Unit 2: Business Resources: Develop learner knowledge of the range of human, physical, technological and financial resources required in an organisation, and how the management of these resources can impact on business performance.

Unit 3: Introduction to Marketing: Give learners an understanding of how marketing, research and planning and the marketing mix are used by all organisations.

Year 13 - There are three more units to be completed including Communications in Business.

Business Studies provides a valuable training in itself and is useful for a wide range of careers, e.g. Accountancy, Law, Marketing, Human Resources, Business Management and Consultancy and Business Administration. Previous students who achieved good grades (merit and or distinction) are currently studying Business related degrees at universities.

Entry requirements

Merit in BTEC Business Level 2 if studied at GCSE or C in GCSE English Lang and C in GCSE Maths.
